Different methods lightening your hair (for little or no
cost).
I’m sure everyone by now has heard of the lemon juice trick,
spray your hair with lemon juice and expose it to the sun. But, while that’s
great for getting those summer highlights, it won’t get you from black to
blonde. On this page I’ve listed some very inexpensive methods of lightening,
to even fully bleaching, your hair. The list goes from get-a-few-shades-lighter
down to go-platinum-blonde.
A
strand test is recommended for all techniques. Be sure to wear clothing you’re
not too fond of when using these tricks. These all work best on “dirty hair,”
hair that has not been washed in a day or so and has been allowed to build up
its natural oils.
*1st Light lightening technique, going from brown
to a lighter brown (Super good for your hair!):
1 cup
honey
2 tablespoons cinnamon
2/3 cups conditioner
Mix honey, cinnamon, and conditioner well in a bowl then
apply even to your hair. Leave on for about 2 hours. Rinse and wash out with
shampoo. Rinse then condition. Your hair should be a few shades lighter.
Why this
method works: Honey is not only a great for strengthening and moisturizing your
hair but it contains peroxide (the stuff used to bleach hair and whiten teeth).
Cinnamon is sort of a ‘conductor’ or activator for the peroxide, telling it to
lift your hair color. The condition works to, well, condition your hair and to
increase the amount of mixture- allowing you to spread it all throughout your
hair.
Notes: This method is safe to use
twice a week. Leaving it on for more than 2 hours will not harm your hair but
it will not lighten any more. To lighten your hair further, reuse this
technique up to three times a week or try one of the other methods below.
*2nd Lightening Technique, black to brown.
1 cup
honey
2 tablespoons cinnamon
2/3 cups conditioner
½ cup
hydrogen peroxide
Optional
ingredients:
1
tablespoon whitening fluoride toothpaste (I use Crest 3D white)
1
tablespoon boba milk green tea powder
Mix everything together in a bowl, apply evenly to your
hair. Leave on for 20min to 2 hours. Rinse out with shampoo and be very
thorough! You do not want of this stuff to stay in your hair- it could be
damaging. Follow up with conditioner.
How
this method works: The honey and cinnamon work the same as the method above.
The hydrogen peroxide works like the honey, but a lot stronger- allowing your
hair to lighten much more. The toothpaste also contains peroxide- but it has
fluoride as well, which strengthens your hair. The milk green tea powder and
conditioner moisturize your hair, making the peroxide less damaging.
NOTES:
Do not leave on more than 2 hours, it could damage your hair a great deal. The
longer you leave it on the lighter your hair will get. Do not use for more than
twice a week or every four days, as it can really dry out your hair and make it
brittle.
*3rd Lightening Technique, Black to Blonde.
1 cup
hydrogen peroxide
1 cup
baking soda
1 cup
conditioner
Mix together in a bowl and apply evenly to hair. Leave on
for 10min to 1 hour. Rise and be very thorough, I recommend using a shampoo
that is soft on your hair- such as Suave’s Salon Quality line. Make sure to
follow up with conditioner. If you leave it in for more than 20min I recommend
a deep conditioning treatment.
How
this method works: The baking soda activates the peroxide- stripping your hair
of its color. This is very much like what you would by from a beauty supply
store, and what they would use in a beauty salon. The conditioner is used to
protect your hair from becoming too dry and brittle.
NOTES: This is very damaging to your hair!
Do not use it more than once a week, and leave on no longer than an hour! This
is just like the bleach you get in the store- meaning it can make your hair
fall out.
